For Everybody:
Several of the books from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events were made into a movie in 2004. Since then, Netflix has picked up the show. Watch the trailer for the TV-PG rated first season, which covers books 1-4. The books are quirky, funny, mysterious, and touching. Just as in life, endings aren't always neat and mess-free and sometimes the mysteries remain unsolved.
Young Adult:
The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken: A terrible virus wipes out most kids and teens; the ones who survive develop some amazing (and dangerous) new abilities. The Darkest Minds movie comes to theaters August 3, 2018. Watch the trailer for this PG-13 movie here.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas tells the story of a black teen named Starr who goes to a predominantly white private school. She is with one of her oldest friends, Khalil, the night he is shot by a white police officer. Everyone in her neighborhood and at her school, even the whole country, has an opinion about the trajedy and what Starr says or doesn't say will have a huge impact. To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han is the story of a girl who writes letters to the boys she loves, never intending for them to be seen by anyone but her. But what if one of the letters were accidentally sent? What if they were all sent? This is that story. The Netflix original movie debuts on August 17, 2018. Watch the trailer here.
Romantic Comedies:
In Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan, Rachel travels with her boyfriend, Nick, to Singapore where she finds out he's THAT Nick Young. He's not just rich; he's crazy rich and with more money, comes more problems. If you love it, check out the follow-ups China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. Drama:
The Girl in the Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz follows the popular series beginning with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. In this standalone sequel to the original trilogy, Lisbeth Salander finds herself caught in a tangled web of lies someone is willing to kill to keep secret. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows tells a story in letters between the character, Juliet, and members of a group on the island of Guernsey who made up the name as an alibi when caught breaking curfew during German occupation in WWII. The movie is being released in the US by Netflix on August 10, 2018. Watch the trailer here for this unrated film.
A TV show adaptation of The Passage by Justin Cronin is coming to Fox this fall. No release date yet, but watch the trailer for the thrilling sci-fi series here!
From the mind of Stephen King comes Mr. Mercedes, an AT&T original show that returns for a second season on August 22, 2018. It's about a retired detective obsessed with finding a killer who stole a Mercedes and drove it into a crowd, killing eight people and injuring many more. Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 was remade this past year by HBO, and is set for a DVD release on September 21, 2018. Watch the trailer for the TV-14 rated film here. The plot revolves around Montag, a fireman. What's interesting about the firemen of the future? They don't put out fires; they burn books. All books.
Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale is June's story. June is a "handmaid" in the Republic of Gilead, what was formerly known as the United States. The first season of the Hulu orginal series follows the original story, first published in 1985. After winning eight Emmy awards, the series was renewed for a second season and then a third.
